Promoting staff wellbeing

Darfield was at the centre of the 7.1 September Earthquake in 2010. This event, along with the challenges of modern life, has presented our school community with some real tests of our resilience. We would like to share our story of staff wellbeing. It is a story of challenges and successes.

Our story reflects our wellbeing model - the cabbage tree (ti kouka), a tree which provokes strong feelings in most people and which is renowned for its healing properties and its resilience. We have put some roots down and attempted to grow our wellbeing as a staff. Whilst the leaves dry up and fall off and annoy some people, the trunk is resilient and continues to grow and fresh leaves emerge. We have learned a lot along the way and we would like to share this with you: what has worked for us including some practical things you could take back to your own staff. We are a co-ed Decile 9 rural state school.
