All workshops are held on Tuesday 30 April 2019 and can be booked at the time of registration.

Please note minimum numbers are required for workshops to be confirmed.  If workshops have a maximum number, this is also noted in the information below.


Whakarewarewa Redwoods Forest rescue - FULL

Time: 0900 - 1600
Venue: Redwoods Forest (Offsite)

Cost: $180.00 inc gst, per person

Participants will meet at the Millennium hotel and be transported to the Whakarewarewa Redwoods Forest by coach. Facilitated by members of the Auckland Helicopter Emergency Medical Service (HEMS), participants are invited to join the team for a fun, educational and interactive pre-hospital workshop.

Didactic lectures will be kept to a minimum with the majority of sessions being of a practical nature taking place in the majestic Redwoods forest (Whakarewarewa) in Rotorua.  Participants are invited to get on their bikes (provided) and join the team for a morning's ride where casualties will inevitably be happened upon and opportunities provided to both carry out procedures and manage challenging scenarios in an austere (but non-judgemental) environment.

While a stimulating programme can be guaranteed, the weather is less certain so please bring waterproof gear should the day turn inclement.  Bikes, helmets and lunch will be provided and participants will be able to keep their bikes for the remainder of the day in order that they can enjoy the many exhilarating trails the forest has to offer at their leisure.

This workshop is ideally suited to FACEMs (or equivalent) and Registrars nearing the end of their training though there are a limited number of places for observers.

Morning tea, lunch and afternoon tea will be provided.

All participants will be returned to the Hotel no later than 1600.

Te Rongoā Māori bush walk (Immersive Māori medicine experience) - FULL

Participants will meet at the Millennium Hotel and be transported to the Mitai Village by coach. This workshop will immerse you in the beautiful native forest of Aotearoa, New Zealand where people, plants and life merge to form the blueprint for indigenous healing practices. You will be introduced to the importance of the care and protection of ones mauri and the inseparable connection indigenous peoples have with the land and the plants that heal. Experience first-hand, the effect of the native bush on your own health and wellbeing.

Participants should wear warm and comfortable clothing and walking shoes, bring a jacket in case of showers and a camera is sometimes useful for those interested in plant identification. 

Morning tea, lunch and afternoon tea will be provided.

All participants will be returned to the Hotel no later than 1600.

ACEM Core procedural skills - FULL

CPD: Accredited by ACEM for 3 hours of CPD under the Group Learning domain 'Scientific meeting and conference' as well as the individual skills being selected from the Procedural Skills list

This interactive practical procedural skills workshop will cover all the ACEM annual core skill requirements and will be automatically credited to your ACEM CPD account.

Using a popular and non threatening buddy approach delegates will pair up with a colleague to allow an 'observe one do one' approach. After completing 5 x 10 minute manikin scenarios there will be a break before continuing with the remaining 5 (10 in total). 'Completion' of each skill will be based on peer review as there are no trainers.

Morning tea and lunch will be provided for participants.

Radiology Masterclass - FULL

Time:

Facilitator: Barbara Hochstein
Cost: $170.00 inc gst, per person
CPD: Accredited by ACEM for 3 hours of CPD under the Group Learning domain 'Scientific meeting and conference'. 

The workshop will offer participants an interactive session covering the imaging modalities of plain X-ray, CT, MRI and Ultrasound. Barbara is a Radiologist and award winning medical educator who has a friendly and engaging teaching style. There will be audience engagement and mobile voting to make this a truly interactive but non threatening workshop.

This is not intended to turn you into a Radiologist – but should challenge your diagnostic skills and teach some subtleties on imaging interpretation that you can use on your next clinical shift.

Advanced Airway - FULL

Time: 1300 - 1600
Venue: Millennium Hotel
Facilitators: Dr Finn Coulter, Dr Christopher Low, Rachael Bentall and Owen Callendar 
Cost: $160.00 inc gst, per person
CPD: Accredited by ACEM for 3 hours of CPD under the Group Learning domain 'Scientific meeting and conference' as well as the individual skills being selected from the Procedural Skills list.

This interactive practical advanced airway workshop will cover most of the ACEM airway procedural skill requirements and will be atomically credited to your ACEM CPD account. The workshop is FACEM led but friendly ENT and Anaesthetic Specialists will participate in delivering the workshop and answering any questions. 

The format will involve brief presentations and demonstrations at a series of stations before allowing participants to put learning into practice under expert guidance.  Skills covered will include: tracheostomy tube replacement, flexible fibreoptic laryngoscopy, cricothyroid needle insertion, surgical cricothyroidotomy, video laryngoscopy and use of an additional difficult airway device.

Lunch and afternoon tea will be provided.

Indigenous cultural competency

Time:

Facilitator: Wairangi Jones
Cost: $170.00 inc gst, per person
CPD: Accredited by ACEM for 3 hours of CPD under the Group Learning domain 'Scientific meeting and conference'. This workshop is an approved Cultural Competency Activity for ACEM CPD.

The workshop will offer participants an awareness of indigenous approaches to hauora (health and wellbeing).  Based on an holistic framework, participants will learn the pou (pillars) of hauora and their interconnection for a balanced and healthy individual. 

The workshop will be taught using traditional learning styles.  Participants will find the workshop engaging, fun and highly interactive as deep cultural knowledge is shared and explained.  This will be an important step towards building cultural capabilities relevant to both Australian and New Zealand clinicians, who seek to grow their skill base. 

Morning tea and lunch will be provided.

Happiness through mindfulness and compassion

The workshop will offer participants a unique opportunity listen to one of the great minds of Wellness and Mindfulness in New Zealand. Engaging, enlightening, entertaining and humble are words used by those who have had the honour to be present at one of Tony's sessions.

This will be a relaxed and revealing opportunity to gain insight into how we might gain happiness through mindfulness and compassion.

ACEM New Fellows Workshop

Date: Monday 29 April 2019
Time: 0900 - 1830 (The New Fellows workshop will run from 0900 - 1700. A networking function will follow the workshop hosted on the Hotel Pool Deck.)

CPD:  Accredited by ACEM for 8 CPD hours

The ACEM New Fellows Program aims to assist new FACEMs with the transition to Fellowship. This full-day workshop is a chance to hear from other FACEMs about their experiences, including practical tips and tricks for transitioning into Consultant life, and is also a great opportunity to network with other new FACEMs.

Please note: This workshop is only open to Fellows of the Australasian College for Emergency Medicine, elected to Fellowship within the last three years (from April 2016 – April 2019).

EMUGS New Zealand presents Pocus and Procedures - The Pointy End of Care

Date: Sunday 28 and Monday 29 April 2019

Join us for our first EMUG NZ Regional Meeting for 2019 with the highly anticipated topic: Basic POCUS eFAST and AAA Workshop

Designed to facilitate any doctor keen to credential along ASUM and ACEM guidelines, in the basic modules of eFAST and AAA. Candidates commit to two hours of online modules pre-course covering the basics of physics in ultrasound and how to perform en eFAST and AAA scan. This will be reviewed in short lectures in the workshop followed by 1.5 hrs of hands on practical instruction in each module. There will also be an assessment at the end and a workshop certificate.

ETMCourse - Emergency Trauma Management Course

Date: Friday 26 - Sunday 28 April 2019

ETM is a 3-day face-to-face course teaching trauma reception and resuscitation from the Australasian Emergency Medicine perspective. Designed by Emergency physicians, ETM Course focuses on practical trauma resuscitation, trauma team leading and trauma team member skills.

ETM Course is designed primarily for emergency registrars and physicians but is also relevant to registrars and fellows of all specialties involved in trauma reception and resuscitation, including Intensive Care, Anaesthetics, Surgery, Retrieval and rural/remote General Practice.
